The 37-day blackout has cut off millions from global communication amid escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel

New Delhi: Iran’s nationwide internet shutdown, imposed in the wake of a joint United States and Israel military operation targeting Tehran, has now stretched into its fifth week. According to digital monitoring organisation NetBlocks, this marks the longest countrywide internet blackout ever documented.
Shutdown crosses record duration
In a statement shared on social media platform X, NetBlocks said the disruption has persisted for 37 uninterrupted days, exceeding 864 hours. This surpasses all previously recorded incidents in both duration and scope.
“Iran's internet blackout is now the longest nation-scale internet shutdown on record in any country, exceeding all other comparable incidents in severity having entered its 37th consecutive day after 864 hours,” the group stated.
Limited access through controlled channels
The disruption, which began on February 28, has effectively cut off ordinary citizens from the global internet. Authorities are reportedly testing a controlled access model that permits selective connectivity through a tiered whitelist system.
Comparison with other global shutdowns
NetBlocks noted that while several regions across the world have faced internet disruptions, these have typically been temporary or confined to specific areas. Examples include shutdowns in Myanmar, Sudan, Kashmir and Tigray. However, none have experienced a complete nationwide disconnection for such an extended period after previously having standard internet access.
In contrast, countries such as North Korea remain largely cut off from the global internet by design, but were never fully connected in the first place.
Blackout amid ongoing military escalation
The extended shutdown coincides with sustained missile and drone strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on targets within Iran.
In retaliation, Tehran has launched attacks on American and Israeli facilities located in neighbouring Gulf states, intensifying the regional conflict.
Restrictions on alternative connectivity
Authorities in Iran have also tightened control over alternative means of accessing the internet. Satellite connections and virtual private networks have been restricted, leaving many citizens without dependable communication channels.
Human impact and ongoing uncertainty
NetBlocks underscored the humanitarian implications of the blackout, pointing out that families are unable to reach loved ones during a period of heightened tension.
