Iran alerts UN over US-Israeli attacks near Bushehr Nuclear Plant, citing serious risk of radiological release. IAEA confirms one death, auxiliary building damaged, no radiation rise. International calls for nuclear safety amid West Asia tensions.

Tehran: Iran has raised serious international alarms over US-Israeli strikes near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, warning of a serious risk of radiological release. In a formal letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed deep concern that repeated attacks on nuclear infrastructure could have severe human and environmental consequences.
“The repeated attacks by the aggressors in the vicinity of the active Bushehr nuclear power plant are of great concern… Proximity of these attacks to an active nuclear facility creates an intolerable situation that poses a serious risk of radiological release.,” Araghchi wrote, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The letter highlighted that the recent strikes, including the latest targeting of Bushehr, could expose the entire region to radioactive contamination if not urgently addressed.
IAEA confirmsfourth strike near Bushehr nuclear plant
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also expressed deep concern. Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi confirmed that a projectile struck close to the plant earlier on Saturday, marking the fourth such incident in recent weeks amid escalating regional tensions.
According to the IAEA, a projectile fragment killed one physical protection staff member.
An auxiliary building was damaged due to shockwaves and debris.
The main plant structures and nuclear operations remain intact, and no increase in radiation levels has been detected.
“NPP sites or nearby areas must never be attacked, noting that auxiliary site buildings may contain vital safety equipment. Reiterating the call for maximum military restraint to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident, DG Grossi again stresses the paramount importance of adhering to the seven pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during a conflict,” Grossi said in a statement shared on X.
Meanwhile, the Tasnim News Agency confirmed that while the strike affected an auxiliary building, energy production at Bushehr continues unaffected. The projectile hit the plant perimeter early Saturday morning, intensifying fears over the safety of nuclear facilities amid US-Israeli military actions in West Asia.
