Colombo: The Indian Army is aiding bridge reconstruction to restore severed road links in Sri Lanka and facilitate travel for communities impacted by Cyclone Ditwah, officials stated on Thursday.

The bridge repair work targets the northern Kilinochchi district, the Indian High Commission noted.

In the central Nuwara Eliya district, one of the hardest-hit areas, the mission handed out dry ration kits to 200 families.

The finance ministry reported a 100 million LKR donation on Thursday from Indian conglomerate Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd.

Cyclone Ditwah triggered extensive flooding, landslides, and critical infrastructure failures across the island, overwhelming national disaster response capabilities.

As of Wednesday, 643 people had perished, and 183 remained unaccounted for since November 16, amid landslides, floods, and torrential rains that wrought havoc, according to Colombo's Disaster Management Centre (DMC).

The DMC added that 6,228 homes suffered total destruction, 1,01,055 incurred partial damage, with 22,096 families comprising 66,132 individuals still sheltered at 723 relief camps.
