Ottawa: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) Outreach Session on Energy Security and Critical Minerals in Canada, where he underlined India’s perspective on building resilience and reducing dependencies in global supply chains.

In a social media post, Jaishankar said discussions centred on the need to “mitigate dependence, strengthen predictability and build resilience.” Greater international cooperation, he said, was essential to address challenges in both the energy and critical minerals sectors.

He noted that global supply chains remained unpredictable and constrained, emphasising that policy consultations and coordination must translate into action. “India is open to working constructively with international partners in this regard,” the minister said.

On the sidelines of the meeting in Niagara, Jaishankar held separate bilateral discussions with his counterparts from Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Following talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Jaishankar said they had a “useful conversation,” with Sybiha sharing Ukraine’s view on recent developments.

During his meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations, connectivity, and energy cooperation. Talks with EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas focused on strengthening the India-EU Strategic Partnership and perspectives on the G7 agenda.

Jaishankar’s meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio largely covered trade and supply chain issues, while his discussion with Canadian counterpart Anita Anand reviewed cooperation in trade, energy, security and people-to-people ties—part of efforts to reset relations following the diplomatic strain two years ago.

The external affairs minister also met French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

With France, Jaishankar said both sides “took stock” of their Strategic Partnership and discussed expanding cooperation in multilateral forums. Talks with Vieira focused on boosting trade, investment, health and technology collaboration, while with Wadephul, discussions covered the India-EU partnership and global issues, including the Middle East, Indo-Pacific and Afghanistan.

Jaishankar and Cooper acknowledged the “positive momentum” in India-UK relations, officials said.
