Paris: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Thursday, reaffirming the enduring India-France strategic partnership amid a period of profound global geopolitical and economic upheaval.

During the high-level talks, Jaishankar conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the challenges of a shifting global order, regional security, and the necessity for deepened coordination between strategic allies.

"Delighted to call on President Emmanuel Macron of France today and convey warm wishes of PM Narendra Modi," Jaishankar posted on X following the meeting. "Deeply appreciate his perspectives on contemporary global developments and positive sentiments for our Strategic Partnership."

The dialogue comes as both nations navigate a multipolar landscape, with Paris and New Delhi emphasising strategic autonomy and a rules-based international system. The long-standing partnership currently spans critical sectors including defence, space, civil nuclear energy, and the Indo-Pacific region.

While in the French capital, Jaishankar also served as the guest of honour at the 31st French Ambassadors' Conference. Addressing the diplomatic corps, he underlined how trade, technology, and energy are redefining global power dynamics, asserting that a "change in mindset" is essential for nations to adapt to these transformations. He further highlighted the India-France alliance as a pivotal pillar in promoting global multipolarity.

Earlier on Wednesday, Jaishankar participated in the inaugural India-Weimar format meeting. He was joined by Polish Deputy Prime Minister RadosƂaw Sikorski, French Foreign Minister Jean-NoĂ«l Barrot, and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. The engagement signalled a new structured dialogue between India and the prominent "Weimar Triangle" of European powers.

“We have been witnessing for quite some years now that churn in the Indo-Pacific. Europe is going through its own challenging circumstances,” Jaishankar noted during the session. He described the exchange as vital for sharing assessments across different geographic regions to stabilise global politics.

Jaishankar’s visit also served as a preparatory step for President Macron’s upcoming trip to India next month, where the French leader is expected to attend the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

"France is amongst our oldest strategic partners, the first in Europe," Jaishankar said. "Our continuous conversation is an important part of nurturing that relationship."
