Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking permission to undergo medical tests and examinations within three days at Shaukat Khanum Hospital, according to local media reports on Thursday.

The founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party submitted the plea through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The petition urged the court to allow monthly medical check-ups and tests for Imran Khan at Shaukat Khanum Hospital. It also asked the court to grant full access to medical teams and permit examinations in line with Imran Khan's medical history and current health condition, as reported by The News International.

The plea further requested that a copy of the medical report be handed over to Imran Khan's family and presented in court. According to the petition, Imran Khan is suffering from certain medical issues and has been convicted at the direction of the federal government as part of political victimisation.

What has Imran Khan alleged about his treatment?

On Wednesday, Imran Khan levelled serious allegations against Pakistan's Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing him as a "mentally ill person" and accusing him of destroying the country's constitution.

In a statement issued on X, Imran Khan said, "Asim Munir is a mentally ill person whose moral degradation has completely destroyed the constitution and law in Pakistan and the basic human rights of any Pakistani are no longer protected. My wife and I have been imprisoned on false charges on the orders of Asim Munir and are being subjected to the most severe mental torture. I have been completely locked up in a cell and put in solitary confinement. I have not met a single human being for four weeks and I have been kept completely unaware of the outside world, even our basic needs as provided by the prison manual have been eliminated."

He added, "Despite the orders of the High Court, first my meeting with political colleagues was banned and now my meeting with lawyers and family members has also been stopped. Look at any human rights charter and mental torture is also called 'torture' and is considered a more serious act than physical torture. My sister Noreen Niazi was dragged onto the street, just because she had the legitimate right to meet me."

What has Imran Khan’s family said about his condition?

On Tuesday, Imran Khan's sister Uzma Khanum stated that her brother's health is ‘fine’, although he continues to endure mental torture.

Uzma Khanum mentioned that her meeting with the former prime minister lasted 20 minutes. Her comments came after Adiala jail authorities allowed her to meet him following repeated refusals of meetings with family members and PTI leaders.

What legal challenges does Imran Khan still face?

Imran Khan, who has been in prison since August 2023, is facing multiple cases, including charges related to corruption and terrorism, following his ousting from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022.
