US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has issued a sharp response to US President Donald Trump after he called her a “phony” and made controversial remarks about her background and the African nation of Somalia during a recent event in Florida.

Responding on X, Omar launched a direct attack on Trump, saying, “This unhinged rant would solicit anger if it wasn’t coming from a criminal, who has 34 felony convictions, held accountable for rape and accused of being a pedo. I still don’t know how anyone would willingly humiliate themselves like this but here we are. Btw, the pedophile protection party should find new material for their deflection.”

Her comments mark the latest escalation in a long-running political feud between the two.

Trump’s recent remarks in Florida

During a public appearance, Trump criticised Somalia and linked his remarks to Omar, saying, “Somalia, it's a beautiful place. It's got no government, it's got no military, it's got no anything… It's filthy, dirty, disgusting… It's a horrible place.”

He also targeted Omar directly, stating, “Ilhan Omar... comes here from Somalia, and she tells us how to run the United States of America… Get the hell out. What a phony.”

Trump further repeated long-standing and disputed allegations about Omar’s personal history, including claims regarding her marriage and immigration status, which have not been legally established.

Earlier political clashes

In September 2025, Trump falsely suggested he had spoken with Somalia’s leadership about Omar, implying she was discussed in the context of deportation. Omar rejected the claim and called Trump a “lying buffoon,” accusing him of fabricating events.

"From denying Somalia had a president to making up a story, President Trump is a lying buffoon. No one should take this embarrassing fool seriously," Omar posted.

Trump has also repeatedly criticised Somalia’s governance and economic conditions in past statements, linking those criticisms to Omar’s political stance in the United States.

"70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity. Somalia is consistently ranked among the World's Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government."

Turning his remarks directly toward Omar, Trump said, "All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! P.S. Wasn't she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship???"

"What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do and how to do it," he added.
