London: One of the world’s largest Holocaust archives has been made available online for the first time, coinciding with Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The Wiener Holocaust Library’s new online portal hosts more than 150,000 documents, including photographs, transcripts, and testimonies, chronicling Nazi Germany’s genocide of six million European Jews.

Fighting lies with truth

“The need to defend the truth has been given new urgency by the resurgence of anti-Semitism and other forms of misinformation and hatred,” Toby Simpson, director of the London-based library, stated in a press release.

“By placing a wealth of evidence freely available online, we are ensuring that the historical record is available for all regardless of their location, prior knowledge, or means.”

Unearthing stories of survival and justice

The extensive collection includes photographs of Auschwitz, the infamous Nazi death camp in Poland where over one million Jews were murdered between 1940 and its liberation on 27 January 1945.

Additionally, documents from the Nuremberg war crimes trials, which prosecuted key Nazi leaders, are featured in the archive. Materials detailing fascist and anti-fascist movements in the United Kingdom before and after World War II are also part of the collection.

Propaganda disguised as everyday items

Among the newly available materials are some 500 pamphlets and books containing anti-fascist propaganda distributed in Germany during the Nazi era. These publications were often disguised as advertisements for cosmetics, shampoo, recipe books, or housewives’ instruction manuals to evade Nazi censorship.

Safeguarding truth for future generations

The Wiener Holocaust Library was founded in the early 1930s by Alfred Wiener, who fled Germany and began gathering evidence of Jewish persecution under the Nazi regime. This mission has now culminated in an online resource that ensures these vital historical records remain accessible to all.
