Washington: US President Donald Trump shared a message ahead of his highly anticipated summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, an event with the potential to shape the course of the Ukraine war and the future of European security. Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, "High Stakes!" before departing for the meeting, scheduled for August 15 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.

Before leaving, President Trump expressed confidence about peace prospects, telling reporters, "I think President Putin will make peace and President Zelensky will make peace." When questioned about whether the US might offer Putin access to rare minerals as an incentive to end the war, Trump responded, "We're going to see what happens with our meeting. We have a big meeting. It's going to be, I think, very important for Russia, and it's going to be very important for us and important for us only that we're going to save a lot of lives." He added, "But what I'm really doing this for is to save thousands of soldiers a week."

Trump also outlined his plans for a follow-up session involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and potentially European leaders. He highlighted this meeting as potentially more crucial than the one with Putin, saying, "We have a meeting with President Putin tomorrow. I think it's gonna be a good meeting, but the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we're having. We're gonna have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelenskyy, me, and maybe we'll bring some of the European leaders along, maybe not."

The summit agenda revolves around ceasefire arrangements, prisoner exchanges, arms-control measures, and possible economic or security guarantees to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Trump has proclaimed his intention to "end the Ukraine war quickly," while Putin continues to seek recognition for Russia’s territorial gains along with sanctions relief. President Zelensky, who has not been invited to the summit, remains steadfast in refusing any territorial concessions.

The outcome of the Alaska talks could also impact global energy prices and India’s import strategies. A peace pact may mean relief for India via lower energy costs, while failure could sustain volatility in commodity markets and ongoing US trade pressure. Investors worldwide are watching the meeting closely, anticipating its effects on the US economy and the future of US-Russia relations.
