Gaza: Hamas has mobilised roughly 7,000 members of its security forces across Gaza, following the recent withdrawal of Israeli troops from several districts.

The order, reportedly sent via phone messages and texts, called on fighters to report within 24 hours to designated positions to “cleanse Gaza of outlaws and collaborators with Israel.”

The movement comes as the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its second day. Gaza’s Hamas-run civil defence agency continues to search through rubble for missing Palestinians, with around 9,500 still unaccounted for. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities are preparing to receive released hostages, with Hamas required to free them by Monday noon local time.

The mobilisation reflects growing uncertainty over who will govern Gaza post-war — a sticking point in the second phase of former President Donald Trump’s plan, which calls for Hamas to disarm. Five new military governors, all with armed-wing experience, have been appointed to oversee operations in the territory.

Local reports indicate armed Hamas units are already deployed across several districts, wearing either civilian clothes or Gaza police uniforms. A retired Palestinian security officer warned that the deployment risks renewed internal bloodshed, noting that Hamas continues to rely on weapons and violence as central to its authority.

Meanwhile, Palestinian civilians are returning to northern Gaza under challenging conditions. Many neighbourhoods remain destroyed, roads blocked with rubble, and basic services limited. Some residents travel long distances on foot or overloaded vehicles to reach their homes, often only to find buildings severely damaged or uninhabitable.

Israel has begun transferring Palestinian prisoners to Ofer and Ketziot jails in preparation for the release of about 1,950 detainees. US Central Command has confirmed that 200 troops are being deployed to Israel to monitor the ceasefire, stressing that no US troops will enter Gaza.

The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the delicate phase of implementing the ceasefire, with the humanitarian and political complexities in Gaza continuing to pose significant challenges for civilians and authorities alike.
