Rome: A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by China’s Hainan Airlines was forced to return to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on Sunday after experiencing an engine problem shortly after takeoff. The incident, which is believed to have been caused by a possible bird strike, occurred just minutes into the flight.
The flight, bound for Shenzhen, China, took off at 9:55 am local time with 246 passengers and 16 crew members on board. Despite the engine issue, the aircraft landed safely without incident. The problem appeared to be with the plane’s right engine, and investigations are underway, according to a spokesman for ADR, the operator of Rome’s airports.
