Washington: The White House said on Thursday that President Donald Trump will decide on whether the US will get involved in the Israel-Iran conflict in the next two weeks.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters at a briefing that she had a message directly from Trump in response to speculation about whether he would get directly involved in the conflict between Iran and Israel.
Trump stated, "Given the significant possibility of negotiations with Iran occurring soon, I will decide whether to proceed within the next two weeks," as conveyed by Leavitt. She mentioned that communication between the U.S. and Iran has been ongoing as both parties engage in talks, but she did not disclose whether these discussions were direct or facilitated by intermediaries. Leavitt emphasized that any diplomatic agreement requires Iran to halt uranium enrichment and ensure that Tehran cannot develop a nuclear weapon. On Wednesday morning, Trump was vague about the possibility of a military strike on Iran's nuclear sites, avoiding a direct answer when asked if he was considering such an action. "I might do it, or I might not. No one knows what I will decide," he told reporters. "What I can say is that Iran is facing many issues, and they are eager to negotiate. I wonder why they didn't seek negotiations with me before all this chaos and devastation occurred."
Trump has throughout his political career repeatedly fallen back on a “two-week” timeline to decide on policy decisions, including in recent weeks when he said he would know in roughly two weeks whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was interested in negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.
Commenting on his two-week timeline in the case of Iran, Leavitt did not directly answer but described the situation in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine as “two very different, complicated global conflicts.”
