Beijing: China on Tuesday said it will firmly protect its national interests after US President Donald Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on any country doing business with Iran. The strong response came amid growing global concerns over rising tensions involving the United States and Iran.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular briefing that China opposes tariff wars and will defend its legitimate rights and interests.

Mao said, “We have always believed that there are no winners in a tariff war, and China will resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.”

Trump’s announcement of 25% US tariff on countries trading with Iran has triggered reactions worldwide, especially as Iran is already facing multiple sanctions. The move could impact major trading partners, including China, India, the UAE and European nations.

China reacts to rising tensions in Iran

The situation in Iran remains tense after widespread anti-government protests. A rights group has estimated that at least 648 people have been killed in the violent crackdown as authorities attempt to control unrest through mass rallies and security actions.

Responding to questions on travel safety, Mao Ning said that China is closely watching developments in Iran.

She added, “We will take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens.”
