Beijing: China is positioning Pakistan as a key intermediary in sensitive Iran-us diplomatic engagements, according to state media reports. The appeal comes as Beijing seeks to stabilise regional tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, while encouraging Islamabad to deepen its mediation role in ongoing backchannel efforts between Tehran and Washington.

China has called on Pakistan to expand its diplomatic engagement in ongoing efforts to ease tensions between Iran and United States, particularly around discussions linked to the reopening and security of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Chinese state media reports cited on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the appeal during a phone call with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The conversation took place ahead of increased diplomatic activity involving regional security and broader geopolitical talks.

During the call, Wang encouraged Pakistan to continue its mediation efforts in facilitating dialogue between Tehran and Washington and to help “properly address” issues surrounding maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.

Pakistani officials reportedly briefed the Chinese side on Islamabad’s recent involvement in supporting communication channels between Iran and the United States. Pakistan also expressed appreciation for China’s backing of its diplomatic initiatives and signalled willingness to deepen coordination with Beijing to support regional stability efforts.

Wang reportedly praised Pakistan’s role in helping extend a temporary ceasefire and reiterated China’s support for dialogue-based solutions. He also emphasised the importance of continued diplomatic confidence-building measures to restore peace in the wider region.

The discussions also touched on broader bilateral relations. Both sides acknowledged the upcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan, and expressed interest in strengthening strategic cooperation, high-level exchanges, and coordination in multilateral forums such as the United Nations.

Pakistan reiterated its commitment to expanding cooperation with China across diplomatic, economic, and strategic areas, while both countries underlined their intent to further consolidate their long-standing partnership and maintain joint positions on global issues.
