Celebrity homes destroyed in fires
Several high-profile Hollywood celebrities have shared their experiences as they’ve fled the fires. Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, lost their home of 45 years in the Palisades fire. The couple, who raised their children and grandchildren in the house, released a statement expressing their heartbreak but emphasizing that their memories could not be taken away. “We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every inch of our house was filled with love. Beautiful memories that can’t be taken away. We are heartbroken, of course, but with the love of our children and friends, we will get through this,” they said.
Other celebrities who have lost their homes include singer and actress Mandy Moore, actor Cary Elwes, and socialite Paris Hilton. Moore shared her shock and devastation on Instagram, posting a video of the destruction around her Altadena neighborhood. “I’m in shock and feeling numb for all so many have lost, including my family. My children’s school is gone. Our favorite restaurants, leveled. So many friends and loved ones have lost everything too,” Moore wrote. “Our community is broken but we will be here to rebuild together.”
Hilton also expressed her heartbreak, revealing that her Malibu home, where her young son took his first steps, had been destroyed in the blaze. "The devastation is unimaginable. To know so many are waking up today without the place they called home is truly heartbreaking," Hilton said.
Star Wars icon Mark Hamill shared with his followers on Instagram that he had to evacuate his Malibu residence with his wife and pet dog, driving through a path surrounded by raging fires.
Academy Award-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis also had to leave her home, later posting on Instagram: "Our beloved neighborhood is gone. Our home is safe. So many others have lost everything."
Evacuations, emergency response
As the fire spread, officials issued new mandatory evacuation orders, particularly for areas like the Hollywood Hills. The Sunset fire near Laurel Canyon and Mulholland Drive prompted authorities to clear out residents quickly, while other evacuation orders were put in place for parts of Santa Monica, the San Fernando Valley, and the Altadena area. Uber is offering free rides to evacuation centers to help those affected.
The fire is one of the most destructive in recent Los Angeles history, with hundreds of homes lost and entire neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades decimated. A federal disaster declaration has been signed, allowing for federal funding and assistance for those affected.
Hollywood events cancelled or postponed
The entertainment industry has been rocked by the disaster, with major events being canceled or rescheduled. The unveiling of the Oscar nominations has been delayed until January 19 to give affected Academy members more time to cast their votes. The Critics Choice Awards, set for this Sunday, has been pushed to January 26. Pamela Anderson’s film premiere and several other Hollywood screenings and press conferences have also been called off.
Television shows filmed in Los Angeles, including Grey's Anatomy, Hacks, and Jimmy Kimmel Live, have paused production due to the ongoing crisis. Universal Studios closed its theme park for the day due to dangerous conditions caused by the winds and fires.
Help from public, celebrities
As the flames ravage neighborhoods, there have been acts of bravery and kindness. Actor Steve Guttenberg, known for Police Academy and Cocoon, was seen helping to clear roads to allow fire trucks access to neighborhoods. Meanwhile, reality TV stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt from The Hills also shared their experience on social media, expressing their devastation after watching their house burn down. "Watching our house burn down on the security cameras," Pratt wrote, describing the distressing scene.
As the situation remains critical, residents, celebrities, and first responders continue to fight the raging fires. For now, the people of Los Angeles are left to rebuild their homes, communities, and lives from the devastating aftermath of the fires.
