Tehran: Alireza Arafi, a cleric member of the Guardian Council, has been appointed as the jurist member of Iran’s temporary Leadership Council, the body tasked with carrying out the responsibilities of the supreme leader until a successor is chosen.

Under Iran’s constitution, the three-member council assumes the supreme leader’s duties in the event of a vacancy, ensuring continuity in the command of the armed forces and oversight of key state institutions while the Assembly of Experts deliberates on a permanent replacement.

The move follows the reported death of Ali Khamenei, triggering constitutional provisions in Iran for a temporary leadership structure to prevent a power vacuum.

Arafi will serve on the interim council alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. Together, the trio will collectively exercise the authorities vested in the office of the supreme leader until the Assembly of Experts completes the succession process.
