NDTV report on Tuesday said that a Hindu grocery store owner, Moni Chakraborty, was killed in Bangladesh, marking the latest in nearly half a dozen reported attacks on Hindu men since unrest erupted following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who died in hospital after being shot in an assassination attempt.
Moni Chakraborty was reportedly attacked with sharp weapons in Narsingdi district at around 10 pm on Monday and later died of his injuries.
Acting editor shot dead in Jashore
The latest report came just 24 hours after another Hindu man was allegedly murdered, highlighting a worrying pattern of violence.
On Monday evening, Rana Pratap Bairagi, 45, a Hindu businessman and acting editor of the newspaper Dainik BD Khabar, was reportedly shot dead in Kapalia Bazar, Jashore’s Manirampur district. Bairagi, who also owned an ice-making factory, was attacked at close range by unknown assailants. The motive and identities of the attackers remain unknown.
Series of reported attacks
Other reported cases include the stabbing and burning of Khokon Chandra Das in Shariatpur, the mob lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh over false blasphemy allegations, the killing of Bangladesh Ansar member Bajendra Biswas inside a factory, and the alleged lynching of Hindu youth Amrit Mondal.
