Kabul: A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Friday evening, the fourth to hit the country in less than a month and the second within a span of 12 hours.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred 47 km north-northwest of Khandud at 12:15 UTC (5:45 pm IST) at a depth of 43 km. No reports of casualties or damage have surfaced so far.

Earlier in the day, a 4.3-magnitude tremor was recorded by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), with its epicentre located at latitude 34.57°N and longitude 70.66°E at a depth of 10 km. The quake struck at 5:23 am IST and was felt across parts of eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border.

The twin quakes add to a series of seismic events that have rattled the region over the past month, raising concerns about continued tectonic activity in the area.

According to reports, tremors were also felt in the regions of Jammu and Kashmir
