All passengers and crew members onboard US Aieways Flight 1549 survived the crash, thanks to Sully’s quick thinking, calm demeanour, and decades of flight experience

On January 15, 2009, the world had witnessed an extraordinary act of aviation heroism when Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the icy waters of the Hudson River. Shortly after takeoff from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, the aircraft struck a flock of geese, resulting in catastrophic engine failure. With no viable landing options, Captain Sullenberger executed an emergency water landing, an act later hailed as the “Miracle on the Hudson”.
All 155 passengers and crew members survived the crash, thanks to Sully’s quick thinking, calm demeanour, and decades of flight experience. His actions were widely celebrated, and he was swiftly recognised as a national hero.
The real-life incident inspired the 2016 film Sully, which earned critical acclaim globally. The movie, starring Tom Hanks as Captain Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart as First Officer Jeffrey Skiles, was based on the autobiography Highest Duty, co-authored by Sullenberger and journalist Jeffrey Zaslow.
Despite the overwhelming praise, the incident was not without controversy. Investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the aircraft’s left engine has been operational during the incident. Simulations later suggested that a return to LaGuardia or a diversion to Teterboro Airport could have been possible under ideal conditions.
These findings sparked debates about whether the water landing was necessary. However, both the pilots raised their concerns against the arguments. Ultimately, the NTSB concluded that Captain Sullenberger’s judgement and swift action were perfect in saving all lives on board.
