Singapore: The country’s online sphere has been hit by a wave of virulent racial abuse targeting Indians and South Asians, sparked by news of Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) financial involvement in Air India. The racist hostility, which extended to offensive posts targeting Singaporeans missing after devastating floods in Nepal, has drawn swift police intervention and strong public condemnation from top government leaders.

The surge in xenophobia erupted following reports that Air India is seeking roughly USD 1.5 billion in equity backing from parent entities Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. Online commentators directed intense anti-Indian rhetoric at the deal, launching ethnic slurs and targeted campaigns against senior leadership at Temasek, the state investment firm that owns the majority of SIA.

Temasek chief executive Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara, an Indian origin, and his management team were singled out online over their ethnicity.

Police have opened an active investigation into the comments, described by Senior Minister and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam as “shameful”, “nasty” and “totally unacceptable”. Shanmugam confirmed that law enforcement agencies are tracking down perpetrators, while the Ministry of Digital Development and Information has instructed social media platforms to immediately remove content violating community standards.

Deploring the prejudice, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong warned that hostility must never be allowed to normalise or fracture Singapore’s multiracial society. In a statement on Sunday, Wong stressed that while citizens are free to debate economic policy, using legitimate arguments as a cover for racial hatred is unacceptable. He noted that similar xenophobic sentiment previously surfaced during the COVID-19 pandemic, debates over the CECA trade agreement, and the 2025 General Election.
 

Wong and Shanmugam urged Singaporeans to actively reject online hate speech, reiterating that internet anonymity will not shield individuals whose conduct threatens the nation's social cohesion and core values of unity.
