The succession question at Tata Sons has resurfaced after the company’s board on September 17 voted 4-1 in favour of N Chandrasekaran continuing as chairman, according to people familiar with the proceedings cited by Moneycontrol.

The decision was opposed by Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, who called the board vote ‘illegal’ and said his dissent had been formally recorded.

‘I voted against Chandra’s appointment as chairman. My veto was wrongfully overridden on the basis of a legal opinion. The decision is illegal. I recorded my dissent,’ Noel Tata told Moneycontrol.

The development comes weeks after Chandrasekaran’s continuation appeared to have been settled, bringing the leadership and succession issue back into focus at Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata group.
