Kattapana: The cost of 'Kanthari Mulaku' (Bird's eye chillies) has skyrocketed due to low production in the high range caused by soaring temperatures. The cost of green kanthari rose from Rs 250 per kilogram in November to Rs 500 per kg, while the price of dried kanthari hit Rs 1400 per kg. The price of dried chilli was Rs 700 per kg in November.

Kanthari cultivation has become popular in the high ranges of the state with the introduction of chilli seedlings that guarantee high yield. In addition to this, the comparatively trouble-free cultivation methods of kanthari drew even the homemakers and children to kanthari farming. Kattappana market witnessed the rush of Ayurveda companies who purchased kanthari in huge quantities.

Unfortunately, the scorching heat in the wake of the summer season resulted in large-scale damage to the chilli crops. Hence, the low availability of chillies in the market have resulted in the sudden price hike.

Meanwhile, the summer rainfall received by the end of March and the first week of April is likely to provide relief for the chilli farmers in the high range.
