Kotancherry: The price of ‘Kanthari’ chilli, also known as bird's eye chilli, has skyrocketed to over Rs 600 per kilogram, due to its growing popularity and limited supply. The demand for this spicy chilli has surged, particularly as its availability has decreased, leading to fluctuating prices in the market. Just two months ago, the price of green Kanthari chilli even exceeded Rs 1,000.

The increase in demand can be attributed to salted and dried Kanthari chillies, which are popular among NRI Malayalis who often buy large quantities to take back to their residing countries. Dried Kanthari chillies are also sold in packs, appealing to consumers who prefer chemical-free products with a long shelf life.

Among the varieties, green Kanthari is generally more expensive than white Kanthari, which is heavier and larger. Production of Kanthari chilli drops during the rainy season, contributing to higher prices.

As the demand and prices rise, many are turning to Kanthari cultivation as a source of income. This plant requires minimal care and is not heavily affected by pests, making it an attractive option for agriculture.
