US-based payments giant PayPal has announced that it will integrate India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) into its global ecosystem. This means that Indians will soon be able to use UPI to pay for international purchases through PayPal, just like they do for domestic transactions.

The integration will be part of PayPal World, a new global payments platform set to launch in late 2025. PayPal World aims to connect some of the world’s largest payment systems and digital wallets to enable seamless and secure international payments.

At launch, the platform will support:

  • UPI (via NPCI International Payments Ltd)
  • Venmo
  • PayPal
  • Tenpay Global
  • Mercado Pago (MoU signed; further details awaited)

What this means for Indian users

Once PayPal World goes live, Indian users shopping from international websites will be able to choose PayPal at checkout and then select UPI as their preferred payment method. The process will feel familiar -- just like scanning a QR code or approving a payment in a UPI app in India.

This will eliminate the need for credit cards or foreign exchange conversions for online shopping abroad, making global e-commerce more accessible and affordable for Indians.

Ritesh Shukla, MD & CEO of NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), said:

“The integration of UPI on PayPal World’s platform is a significant step in expanding UPI’s global footprint. It supports our mission to make cross-border payments seamless, secure, and inclusive.”

UPI goes global

The move is expected to expand UPI’s reach globally, following successful partnerships in countries like Singapore, the UAE, France, and Nepal. It also strengthens India’s position as a leader in digital payments innovation.

PayPal, originally co-founded by Elon Musk, is one of the world’s most widely used digital payment platforms. With this integration, UPI will become interoperable with global systems, allowing Indian freelancers, exporters, and consumers to transact across borders with greater ease.

The UPI option on PayPal will become active once PayPal World launches in autumn 2025.
