The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will roll out a 15-minute pre-open session for equity futures and options from 8 December to improve price discovery, transparency, and volatility management.

Mumbai: The National Stock Exchange (NSE) will introduce a 15-minute pre-open session for equity futures and options from December 8, aimed at improving price discovery, enhancing transparency in gap movements, and managing market volatility.
According to the exchange, the pre-open session will run from 9:00 am to 9:15 am and function as a call auction window to determine opening prices for index and single-stock futures before the start of regular trading.
During this period, traders will be able to enter, modify, or cancel orders until a random closure between 9:07 am and 9:08 am. Price discovery and trade matching will continue until 9:12 am, followed by a three-minute buffer to transition to continuous trading at 9:15 am.
The move brings the derivatives segment in line with the equity cash market’s pre-open call auction, the NSE said in a statement.
A mock trading session is scheduled for December 6, giving brokers and market participants a short testing window ahead of the live rollout.
Initially, the mechanism will apply to current-month futures on single stocks and indices. It will later be extended to next-month contracts during the final five trading days before expiry.
Options, spreads, and corporate-action ex-dates will be excluded from the framework, the exchange added.
Traders will be able to view real-time indicative opening prices and order imbalance data during the session. Both limit and market orders will be permitted, while stop-loss and Immediate-or-Cancel (IOC) orders will not be allowed.
Unmatched limit orders will carry forward to the regular market session with their original time-stamps, while unmatched market orders will be converted into limit orders at the discovered opening price.
India’s equity derivatives segment has expanded rapidly, with NSE’s turnover in the category rising from ₹177 trillion in FY10 to over ₹40,000 trillion in FY25, marking a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 43.5 per cent.
