New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has firmly denied any further extension for Income Tax Return (ITR) filing for the Assessment Year 2025-26, clarifying that the official deadline remains September 15, 2025 (today)— contrary to rumors circulating online.

In a late-night post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on September 14, the department flagged as “fake” a widely shared statement suggesting that the deadline had been extended to September 30.

“The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” the Income Tax Department posted, urging taxpayers to ignore misinformation and follow only official updates on its verified handle @IncomeTaxIndia.

No glitches, says IT Department

Responding to growing complaints about glitches on the income tax portal — particularly around tax payments and AIS (Annual Information Statement) downloads — the department said the e-filing platform is functioning smoothly.

“The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser,” it said in response to one user on X.

The department has been actively replying to such queries, asking users facing issues to send their PAN, mobile number, and public IP address to the respective support emails:

For ITR/tax payment issues: orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in

For AIS/TIS issues: cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in

“We've checked with our team. The AIS/TIS facility is functioning without any issues,” it said in response to reports on September 14. “May we request you to please try accessing it again.”

24x7 Helpdesk & support

The department reassured taxpayers that its support services remain active and accessible round the clock.

“To assist taxpayers for ITR filing, tax payment and other related services, our helpdesk is functioning on a 24x7 basis, and is providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions & Twitter/X,” the department noted.

As of September 13, over 6 crore ITRs had been filed, a strong indication of increasing compliance and a broader tax base. For context, the last assessment year (AY 2024-25) saw a record 7.28 crore ITRs filed by the July 31 deadline, marking a 7.5% year-on-year growth over AY 2023-24.

Why the extension to September 15 was given

The department had earlier extended the deadline from July 31 to September 15 due to “structural and content revisions” in ITR forms for AY 2025-26. These changes required corresponding updates in filing utilities and backend systems, prompting the one-time extension.

However, as of now, no further extension is being considered. Taxpayers are advised to complete their filings by September 15 to avoid penalties.
