New Delhi: Job postings for Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) in India surged nearly 19-fold between June 2025 and June 2026, driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, according to a report by Indeed.

FDE job postings rose 1,807 per cent year-on-year in June 2026. Although demand eased after reaching its peak, postings remained nearly 16 times higher year-on-year in July and more than six times higher in August, the report said.

The trend points to a broader shift in how companies deploy technology, with engineers increasingly working closely with customers to solve business problems and ensure that technological innovations deliver measurable results.

The report noted that demand for FDEs began accelerating in March 2026. The sustained growth beyond the June peak suggests that the hiring trend may reflect a deeper change in how businesses implement AI and other technologies, rather than a temporary surge linked to the AI boom.

What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?

Forward Deployed Engineers work at the intersection of software engineering, technology implementation and customer engagement. Unlike conventional software engineering roles, which may focus primarily on developing products, FDEs work closely with customers to understand their requirements and adapt technological solutions to real-world problems.

“The need behind it is easy to understand: companies want engineers who can sit with a customer, unpack a real problem and make the technology work in practice,” said Sashi Kumar, managing director of Indeed India.

However, the emerging role has also created uncertainty among jobseekers. Public discussions on Glassdoor India show professionals seeking clarity on how FDE positions differ from conventional software engineering jobs, what the interview process involves and which skills they need to develop.

Kumar said the sharp rise in job postings reflected how quickly employers were moving to recruit for these roles, while discussions among professionals highlighted the lack of clarity surrounding the position and its hiring requirements.

Skills and salary for FDE jobs

FDE roles span several sectors, including enterprise AI, data engineering, workflow automation, customer service automation, infrastructure and healthcare, as well as other industry-specific applications.

Job listings are available in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai, alongside remote opportunities.

The key skills sought by employers include Python or Java programming, data engineering, machine learning, generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI agents, cloud technologies, application programming interfaces (APIs), system integrations and full-stack development.

According to the Indeed report, candidates entering the field can expect an average annual base salary of approximately Rs 12 lakh. The reported base-pay range is between Rs 9 lakh and Rs 16 lakh per year.

The sharp increase in demand highlights the growing importance of engineers who can combine technical expertise with customer-facing problem-solving skills as companies seek to translate AI capabilities into practical business applications.
