Gold remained elevated on August 17 while Indian equities faced a subdued start. Here are the latest gold, silver, Sensex and Nifty market updates and the key factors driving prices.

Gold prices were trading higher on Monday, August 17, while Indian equities were set for a subdued start as mixed Asian markets, elevated crude prices and global geopolitical uncertainty weighed on market sentiment.
Gold price today
Gold continued to remain elevated amid uncertainty in global markets linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and expectations around US interest rates.

The India Bullion and Jewellers Association data cited in the report put 24-carat gold at ₹1,49,621 per 10 grams on Friday.
The market has also been supported by lower US Treasury yields, a weaker US dollar and volatility in crude oil prices.

Share market today
Indian equities were heading for a muted opening on Monday.
GIFT Nifty was down 24 points, or 0.10%, indicating a weak start for the Sensex and Nifty.
On Friday:
- Nifty 50: closed 0.12% lower at 24,366
- Sensex: closed 0.09% lower at 78,009
Asian markets were mixed at the start of Monday's session, while US futures were broadly flat.
Global market cues
Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 0.4%, while the Topix fell 0.11%.
South Korean markets were closed for a holiday.
On Friday, US markets ended lower. The S&P 500 declined 0.2%, the Nasdaq fell 0.3% and the Dow Jones slipped 107.58 points, or 0.2%.
Crude oil remains a key market trigger
Oil prices remained close to the psychologically important $90-per-barrel level for Brent crude.
Brent was quoted at around $88.40 a barrel, while WTI crude traded near $82.04.
For India, elevated crude prices can affect inflation, the rupee and the country's import bill, making oil movements an important factor for equities.
Rupee and dollar
The US Dollar Index was at 99.54, down 0.13%.
The Indian rupee had appreciated marginally to ₹95.43 against the US dollar at the close on August 14. Movements in the dollar can also influence gold because internationally traded gold is priced in US dollars.
FII and DII activity
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers of Indian shares worth ₹508.12 crore on August 14, according to provisional NSE data.
Domestic institutional investors were also net buyers, purchasing shares worth ₹356.40 crore.
Institutional flows will remain an important factor for the direction of Indian equities.
Why gold and stocks are moving differently
Gold and equities can react differently to the same global uncertainty.
Gold tends to benefit when investors seek defensive assets amid geopolitical tensions, expectations of lower interest rates or weakness in the US dollar.
Equities, meanwhile, can come under pressure when investors worry about crude oil prices, inflation, corporate earnings or geopolitical risks.
The current market therefore has several competing signals: gold remains supported by uncertainty and monetary expectations, while equities are dealing with high oil prices and mixed global cues.
What investors should watch
The main market triggers on August 17 include:
- Global developments surrounding the US-Iran conflict
- Brent crude's movement around the $90 level
- US interest-rate expectations
- The US dollar and Treasury yields
- Foreign and domestic institutional flows
- Asian market trends
- Movement in the rupee
- Domestic corporate and sector-specific developments
