How to sell gold in India?
There are several places where you can sell gold in India, including specialised gold-buying companies. Before selling, make sure you have your PAN card or other valid identity proof. If you are selling jewellery, you may also be asked to provide the purchase receipt.
It is always advisable to check the latest gold rates in India before selling your gold. Gold-buying companies generally use machines such as a karat meter to assess the purity of the metal. This helps determine the value of your gold more transparently and reduces the risk of being offered an unfair price.
Also, make sure you obtain a receipt containing all the details of the gold sold. Keeping this record can be useful for your future reference.
Purity of gold
The gold available in the market is often mixed or alloyed with other metals such as copper, nickel, silver, palladium and zinc. The type and proportion of these metals determine the colour, strength and purity of the gold.
Gold alloyed with silver and copper can be used to make pink or rose gold. Gold mixed with silver or copper can also be referred to as green gold in some cases. White gold is generally mixed with metals such as palladium, nickel and zinc, while yellow gold is commonly alloyed with silver, copper and zinc.
The karat indicates the purity of gold and shows how much pure gold is present in the alloy. The purity levels are:
24 carats – 99.9%
23 carats – 95.6%
22 carats – 91.6%
21 carats – 87.5%
18 carats – 75.0%
17 carats – 70.8%
14 carats – 58.5%
10 carats – 41.7%
9 carats – 37.5%
8 carats – 33.3%
An important point to note is that lower-karat gold is generally stronger and more durable because it contains a higher proportion of other metals.
