In the complaint filed with police, Sufaida’s brother, MK Abdul Vasil, alleged that she had been subjected to both physical and mental harassment by her husband and mother-in-law.

Kasaragod: A 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after consuming a chemical substance in front of her in-laws at Cherkala here.
The deceased has been identified as MK Fathimath Sufaida, a native of Cherladukka in Chengala. She was the wife of Adil, a resident of Panalam, Chengala.
Following a complaint from the woman’s family alleging domestic abuse, Vidyanagar police arrested her husband, Adil.
Sufaida, a BA and BEd graduate, had been working as a daily wage English teacher at Thanbeehul Islam Higher Secondary School. Adil was working abroad. The couple had married a year ago after being in a relationship for nearly three years. They also have a two-month-old baby girl.
According to the family, problems related to gold and continuous harassment from her husband’s family had affected Sufaida after the marriage. The incident occurred just a day before the couple’s first wedding anniversary.
Her brother had reportedly reached her husband’s house on Saturday night to take her back home. During this time, Adil allegedly spoke provocatively and told her not to return if she left the house. Soon after, Sufaida allegedly consumed a chemical solution used for rust removal in front of family members.
She was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Chengala but died around 1.30 am on Sunday.
In the complaint filed with police, Sufaida’s brother, MK Abdul Vasil, alleged that she had been subjected to both physical and mental harassment by her husband and mother-in-law.
Sufaida was the daughter of the late Abbas and Safiya of Cherladukka.
