The Department of Archaeology will investigate an incident in Kannur district of Kerala where gold and silver hoards were found by daily labourers while digging rain pits.
There is strong suspicion that a treasure trove may be located elsewhere on the premises, prompting further inspections. During initial digging to a depth of one meter, a treasure containing gold ornaments was found.
Two workers were involved in the digging work. They noticed something inside a box but initially received little attention when they called out about finding what seemed to be a bomb, treasure, or black magic. Later, one of them retrieved the box and found gold inside.
"No one noticed the valuables inside. It wasn't until 4 p.m. that we noticed something flashing inside the box lying in the pit. Upon opening it, we found gold. Everyone rushed to have a look at it. We emptied contents of the box. Some people picked it up and examined it, confirming it was indeed gold. We informed the panchayat about this. They instructed us to leave it there, promising to come the next day. At dusk, we all departed and one of the people was entrusted to look after the artefacts. The panchayat called the police station, and officers arrived to take custody of the valuables before leaving," one of the workers told Mathrubhumi News. The officials also found 345 pieces of silver near the pit.
