Paralysed by polio, Reeja contests local elections in an electric wheelchair for Mukkam Municipality, defying all odds.

Mukkam: Reservations exist in many spheres for people with disabilities—but not in elections. If one can work hard, support one’s family and inspire others, why shouldn’t they contest elections? said Reeja Thekkepoyil, NDA candidate from the Kayyerikal Division (27) of Mukkam Municipality, in a Facebook post.
Polio struck Reeja at the age of 10, limiting her mobility and putting her dreams on hold. Yet she refused to be defeated by fate. She will contest the elections in an electric wheelchair.
Her body weakened to the point that she had to stop schooling in fifth grade. Reeja underwent long-term treatment at Kozhikode Medical College and private hospitals. While she regained movement in her hands, her legs remained immobile. During this period, she also lost her father. To make matters worse, her mother too was later rendered unable to work because of paralysis.
Reeja runs a tailoring shop in Manassery. She uses a hand-operated sewing machine to make garments. She obtained a three-wheeler through a municipal scheme, thanks to her sheer determination.
When informed that earlier the vehicle could not be issued without a driving licence, she reached out to the All Kerala Wheelchair Rights Federation. With the organisation’s help, she approached the District Collector, who coordinated with the RTO officer to grant her special permission.
Within days, Reeja learned to drive using a friend’s vehicle, obtained her licence and claimed her three-wheeler under the municipal scheme.
With rain during election season, she is currently campaigning in a friend’s car. Reeja says that once the rain stops, she will return to campaigning in her wheelchair.
Her courage, determination and commitment to public service make her candidacy truly inspiring.
