Thiruvananthapuram: The Corporation imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital for dumping wastes near Operation Theatre and pay-wards.

The Local Self Government Department launched an inspection of all large facilities, including hospitals, to assess waste management and disposal. The department also deployed Enforcement Squads to perform inspections at the state level.

Authorities have lately discovered degradable, biodegradable garbage and plastic bottles dumped on the premises of General Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Following this, the corporation imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 and gave three days to remit the fine. The officials also instructed the hospital to adhere to the green protocols on hospital grounds.

The corporation also instructed the hospital to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. A biogas plant should be used to dispose of biodegradable waste. The non-biodegradable waste, excluding bio-medical wastes, should be handed over to Haritha Karma Sena.

The bio-medical wastes should be handed over to IMAGE (Indian Medical Association Goes Eco-friendly), a common Biomedical Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility at Palakkad.

The hospital canteens should stop using one-time usable plastics and should adopt steel plates and cutleries.

Each ward should have separate waste bins for degradable and non-degradable wastes. Strict action, including fines, should be imposed and patients should be restricted from using single-use plastic items.
