Thiruvananthapuram: The UTS mobile app, which allows passengers to purchase ordinary (general class/unreserved coach) train tickets without standing in queues, is not very familiar to Malayalis. Although they are generally ahead in online transactions, Malayalis seem to be lagging behind when it comes to purchasing unreserved train tickets online, as per the data.

Despite the mobile app being available in the state since 2014, only 3% of people had used it up until last July. A large portion of the population is unaware that such a mobile app even exists. However, with the launch of awareness programs at railway stations, usage has increased to 10.05%.

Through this app, platform tickets can also be purchased without standing in queues. Tickets can be booked from up to 9 meters away from the station. Previously, tickets could not be booked once inside the station, but now passengers can scan the QR code once inside the station and purchase tickets. Additionally, passengers can upgrade to higher classes by paying an extra fee. The app also provides details of trains arriving and departing. Passengers must begin their journey within three hours of ticket purchase.
