Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary MV Govindan on Sunday informed the party’s stand on the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that has been in the limelight due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remark on the matter.

According to Govindan, UCC is part of the Hindutva agenda, and the move aims at dismantling the diversity of the country. CPM opposes UCC and would organise “anti-CAA model" protests, Govindan informed.

He noted that Samastha will be invited to the agitation. Interestingly, Govindan remarked that even Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) can be part of the agitation. It may be noted that IUML is in UDF. However, CPM has been hinting at its interest to welcome IUML to LDF.

Meanwhile, the development also comes at a time when IUMLstate president Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal recently welcomed LDF-affiliated Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar’s statement that Muslim organisations must set aside differences and work together.

CPM leadership has decided to tread with caution; taking the political scenario of the state into consideration. The party members are watchful of the Muslim League’s attempts to pursue the political situation. CPM managed to gather massive support among the Muslim-Christian communities during the anti-CAA protests. The party leadership aims to repeat the same by launching a massive campaign against UCC.

The concept of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been a topic of discussion for the past four years, and it has once again come into focus following Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his recent public address in Madhya Pradesh batted for the uniform law.

PM Modi said that the country cannot run on two laws and that Uniform Civil Code was part of the Constitution. "Today people are being instigated in the name of UCC. How can the country run on two (laws)? The Constitution also talks of equal rights...Supreme Court has also asked to implement UCC. These (Opposition) people are playing vote bank politics," PM Modi had said.
