Kochi: The recovery of MLA Uma Thomas after a life-threatening fall has been a deeply emotional journey for the medical team treating her, particularly Dr Krishnanunni Polakulath, Medical Director at Renai Medicity.

"This January was one of the most mentally stressful periods in my 24-year medical career. Seeing her smile again is an unforgettable joy as a doctor," said Dr. Krishnanunni, reflecting on the challenging days following Thomas’ accident.

Uma Thomas sustained serious injuries on December 29 after falling from an elevated stage at Kaloor Stadium. The injuries included a severe skull fracture, damage to her right eye socket, and a fractured rib, with blood from the head injury entering her lungs.

"The situation was critical when she arrived. We immediately performed a CT scan, followed by plastic surgery for her eye. A bronchoscopy procedure lasted until 2 am was necessary to remove blood from her lungs," Dr Krishnanunni recounted.

By the third day, doctors began reducing her sedation and ventilation, and she started responding. Two days later, she was removed from the ventilator. Thomas was moved out of the ICU on January 9 and continued her recovery in a private room.

By January 17, she was able to walk with support. "When she held my hand and walked, it was a profoundly moving moment for me and the entire medical team," the doctor shared.

Thomas is now on minimal medication and continues with physiotherapy, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, and psychological therapy. While six weeks of rest is required, her recovery has been a source of immense pride and relief for the team.

"Seeing her regain her strength is the greatest reward for all the effort and care we put in," said an overjoyed Dr Krishnanunni.

Earlier on Friday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Minister K N Balagopal and CPM District Secretary C N Mohanan, met the MLA. The CM made the hospital visit before leaving for the CPM Central Committee meetings in Kolkata.
