Kerala-based political outfit Twenty 20, led by Kitex MD Sabu Jacob, has formally joined the NDA, with an official announcement scheduled at an event attended by Prime Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: BJP Kerala state president K Surendran said the party welcomed Twenty20’s entry into the National Democratic Alliance, describing it as a positive development for both the alliance and the state.
The formal announcement is set to take place on Friday at a public function in Thiruvananthapuram, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present.

Former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said Twenty20 was a development-focused party that addressed people’s issues, adding that its inclusion strengthened the NDA. He also highlighted Sabu Jacob’s role as an entrepreneur who has generated employment in Kerala and other states, including Telangana, and said such leadership was necessary for the alliance.
Chandrasekhar stated that Kerala politics had long been dominated by the UDF and LDF, both of which had alternated in power amid repeated controversies. He alleged that their economic policies had failed and claimed the LDF’s decade-long rule had harmed the state’s development. He expressed confidence that voters would offer decisive support to the NDA in the forthcoming elections.
Explaining the decision, Sabu Jacob said Twenty20 had reassessed whether meaningful change in Kerala was possible while remaining independent. He said the party was formed out of dissatisfaction with both the LDF and UDF, accusing them of damaging the state. He also recalled that during local body elections, multiple parties across political fronts had joined hands against Twenty 20, which he said demonstrated the threat its growth posed to established players.
Jacob said the decision to align with the NDA was aimed at demonstrating an alternative development model and bringing about long-term political change in Kerala, with the stated objective of achieving a developed state.
How does it matter?
Sabu M Jacob, managing director of the Kitex Group, entered politics after years of openly criticising successive LDF and UDF governments over what he described as hostile policies towards entrepreneurs and investors in Kerala. His frustrations with governance and bureaucracy led to the launch of the Twenty20 political movement in 2015.
Twenty20 rose to prominence through the Kizhakkambalam model of local governance, focusing on development-driven administration rather than ideology. The party gained control of several panchayats in eastern Ernakulam and positioned itself as an alternative to both major political fronts, repeatedly ruling out alliances.
However, limited expansion beyond local strongholds and electoral setbacks in recent local body polls prompted a strategic rethink. Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, Sabu Jacob acknowledged the constraints of going solo, leading to Twenty 20’s decision to formally join the NDA, marking its first alliance with a major political front.
