Thiruvananthapuram: The DPR (Detailed Project Report) for the metro project in Thiruvananthapuram city is nearing completion, a source in KMRL (Kochi Metro Railway Limited) revealed.

According to the reports, DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) has completed 95 per cent of DPR and will soon submit the same to KMRL.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the DMRC AND KMRL officials will be held on Friday. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera said, “Discussions related to the implementation of the project shall take place in the meeting ahead of the submission of project DPR.”

Both parties are examining the possibilities of phase 2 development of the metro. After studying the prospects, DMRC will hand over DPR to KMRL within two weeks, which will then be forwarded to the state government.

In the interim union budget announced on Thursday, the Centre had promised adequate support for the metro projects in the cities. A medium metro project along the lines of the Kochi metro is currently coming up in the state capital.

The laser survey carried out for the first (Pallippuram-Pallichal) and second (Kazhakkootam-Karode-Killipalam) phases will reveal which works to be initially taken up for the metro project. The DPR will provide a clear picture of the same.

DMRC has apparently hired an agency to conduct the survey for them. An alternative analysis report for the initiation of the metro project suggests the construction of subways on a few important stretches. This is crucial since the city consists of high and low-lying areas.

Attempts are also being made to link Land-Air-Water transport systems in the capital city with the metro project. Details regarding this have also been mentioned in the DPR. A study also details the impending socio-cultural changes in the city over the next 30 years. The first phase of the ‘metro’ is a 27.4-km long stretch between Pallippuram techno city and Pallichal. The second phase includes a 14.7 km-long stretch between Kazhakootam-Killipalam.
