Gudalur: A tourist drowned in the Sigur river at Mudumalai here. Palarivattom native MP Vinod (45) who arrived to visit the tourist destinations of Mudumalai tiger reserve drowned in the river at Kargudi wildlife sanctuary.
The nine-member tourist group stayed at a hotel in Kargudi and went for bathing in the river around 3.30 pm, said the forest guards. Police informed that the other two had left for Ooty without staying there.
The incident happened soon after they stepped into the river. While bathing, Vinod was washed away by water current and his friends could not save him. The body was retrieved by the combined efforts of diving experts and the fire force personnel.
Though the tourists usually come here for bathing, no warning boards or safety equipment were installed in the site.
Vinod and his friends had set out for the trip on Sunday morning. They were planning to go to Ooty on Tuesday and return from there. Vinod is survived by wife Rini and daughter Riya.
