Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain across the state from Monday. A yellow alert has been declared in several districts for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The department has noted that heavy rain may occur in isolated areas.

The yellow alert for November 17 covers Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.

For November 18, the alert includes Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Malappuram.

On November 19, the alert remains in place for Kottayam and Idukki. Heavy rain refers to rainfall measuring 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

The authorities have also issued a warning for thunderstorms that may bring light to moderate rain along with gusty winds reaching 40 kmph in parts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. Light rain is expected in one or two locations in the remaining districts.

The agency has urged the public to remain cautious. There is a risk of accidents caused by falling trees or broken branches during strong winds. People are advised not to stand under trees or leave vehicles parked beneath them during windy, rainy conditions.

Unsecured hoardings, electric poles and flagpoles may collapse in strong gusts, so these structures should be stabilised when weather conditions are calm. The public has been reminded not to halt or park vehicles near such installations during spells of wind and rain.

Authorities have also issued an advisory for fishermen. Winds reaching 35–45 kmph, with gusts touching 55 kmph, are likely along and off the south Andhra Pradesh coast, nearby sea areas, the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Kanyakumari region.
