Thrissur: In a remarkable feat, a Malayalee will now head the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in Baltimore. Dr Shyam Sundar Kottilil, a native of Thrissur, has assumed the role as Interim Acting Director of IHV.
The appointment was made after Dr Robert C Gallo, Founding Director of the Institute, stepped down from the director post. Dr Kottilil is also the Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UMSOM.
Dr Kottilil, who completed MBBS from the Medical College in Thrissur, also guided the initiation of the Institute of Advanced Virology at Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram in 2019.
