Thrissur: The District Collector has ordered a detailed magisterial inquiry into a massive explosion at a fireworks shed in the district, which has claimed 13 lives so far.

The Revenue Divisional Office (RDO), acting as Sub-Divisional Magistrate, has been entrusted with the investigation. Officials have been directed to examine the cause of the accident and its consequences thoroughly.

A total of 23 injured people have been admitted to Government Medical College Hospital Thrissur.

District Collector Shikha Surendran said that around 30 to 40 people were present at the site at the time of the explosion. Some are believed to have stepped away briefly to drink water or for other reasons.

The exact cause of the blast remains unclear. Rescue operations are continuing at pace, with several agencies working in coordination, including the police, fire and rescue services, health department, revenue authorities and disaster management teams. Those injured, including licence holder Mundathikkode Satheesh, are currently undergoing treatment.

On receiving news of the tragedy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan intervened immediately, directing the Chief Secretary to mobilise all government machinery to ensure comprehensive medical care for the injured. He also stated that specialist doctors from outside the state would be brought in if required to treat those with severe burn injuries.

A dedicated system has been set up to monitor the rescue efforts. The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured that assistance would be provided swiftly through coordinated action across departments.
