Thrissur: Adventure seekers have reason to celebrate as two new trekking and nature tourism spots are soon to open in Thrissur district. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) has identified Muniyattukunnu and Kunjali Para as promising locations for adventure tourism. A detailed project report worth ₹2 crore has already been submitted to the state government.

Muniyattukunnu is located in Inchakundu, under Varandarappilly panchayat, while Kunjali Para falls within the Mattathur panchayat. To reach both sites, visitors must park their vehicles at the foothills and trek approximately 1.5 kilometres along rocky paths. Muniyattukunnu, known for its ancient burial chambers called muniyaras (Dolmenoid cists), also holds historical significance.

After completing the trek, visitors to Muniyattukunnu can enjoy sweeping views: to the east lie Peechi, Chimmini and Vazhachal, while to the west stretches a patchwork of villages and paddy fields. The north-western viewpoint offers a panoramic glimpse of Thrissur city. Kunjali Para promises similar scenic beauty, with vistas of Kanakamala and even Chalakudy town.

Planned amenities

Both sites will feature entrance gateways, walkways, viewpoints, cafeterias, footbridges, seating areas, toilets, glass bridges, sky rides and zipline facilities. CCTV surveillance will also be installed. Parking facilities for tourists will be developed at the entry points, with the possibility of expanding facilities if additional funding is approved.

How to get there

Muniyattukunnu is 26 km from Thrissur town by road. Buses operate from the town to Inchakundu, after which visitors must travel three kilometres by other vehicles to reach the foothills, where the trek begins.

Kunjali Para is 29 km from Thrissur town. Buses run via the Kodakara–Vellikulangara route up to Moonnumuri; from there, visitors must take other transport to reach the site.

Authorities may impose restrictions on monsoon travel due to the risk posed by slippery rock slopes at both locations.
