Thiruvananthapuram-Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi Express gets modern LHB coach upgrade from May 28. Read about safety features and seating capacity here.

Kozhikode: The Thiruvananthapuram–Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi Express, the last remaining Jan Shatabdi train in India to operate with traditional ICF coaches, will soon be upgraded with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches, the Railways has announced.
The new rake will be introduced starting May 28, with the upgraded service commencing from Thiruvananthapuram in the morning.
The newly allotted LHB rake will consist of 22 coaches equipped with improved safety and passenger comfort features.
- 3 AC Chair Car coaches with 78 seats each (total: 234 seats)
- 17 Second Sitting coaches with 108 seats each (total: 1,886 seats)
- Additional seating capacity for 30 passengers in SLR coaches
LHB coaches, built using German technology, are known for their enhanced safety features, better ride quality, and modern amenities compared to older ICF coaches.
With the introduction of these coaches, passenger safety is expected to improve, especially at higher speeds and during long-distance travel.
Seating layout yet to be confirmed
While the upgrade is expected to benefit passengers, the exact seating configuration will only be known once the coaches are deployed.
There have been concerns among passengers based on past experiences. In 2024, the Kannur Jan Shatabdi Express, after being converted to LHB coaches, was fitted with MEMU-style seating, which received criticism for reduced comfort.
Currently, the Kannur Jan Shatabdi operates using a mix of older and newer LHB coaches, including those originally built in 2019 for the Venad Express.
These coaches feature seating arrangements closer to traditional ICF chair cars, offering better comfort compared to MEMU-style seats.
