Thiruvananthapuram: The corporation employees have collected around three lakh bricks after the Pongala celebrations and moved them to the corporation grounds in Jagathy.
200 loads of blocks were collected on Sunday night. Under the LIFE scheme, 17 houses were constructed using the bricks of the Pongal stove from the previous year. 30 houses are estimated to be constructed using the bricks collected from the Pongala celebrations. With strict intervention from the government, the involvement of middlemen has come down.
360 loads of garbage have also been cleared from the city. 95 percent of it is biowaste. Even though only a few places used non-recyclable plates for serving food and mostly steel plates were used, paper glasses were used to provide drinking water. The collected garbage was buried in six places in the city.
People who are part of various housing schemes can apply for free bricks for house construction, and preference will be given to people with disabilities, extremely poor, widows, etc.
To apply, submit applications along with the required documents (copy of Aadhar card, building permit) to the mayor’s office before March 2.
