Thiruvananthapuram: In connection with the shooting of a woman using an air gun at Vanchiyoor here, a lady doctor was arrested by the local police. The accused is identified as Dr Deepthi, hailing from Kollam. However, the police are yet to confirm the motive behind the crime.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning. The victim, Shini, who works with National Rural Health Mission under the Central Government, was shot in the hand by Deepthi under the guise of delivering a courier. Shini had been asked to sign for a delivery, and when she turned to pick up the pen, Deepthi fired the air gun, injuring her hand.

According to the police, after committing the crime, Deepthi fled in a car with a fake number plate. The car number was that of another car sold by an Aryanad native, weeks earlier. CCTV footage confirmed that the car travelled towards Kazhakootam after passing through Enchakkal on the bypass. It was also seen entering Thiruvananthapuram city from the Attingal side.
Locals were shocked that such an incident occurred in broad daylight without provocation in the typically tranquil Chembakassery Residence Association area.
Shini has been residing here with her husband's family for a long time now. Residents mentioned that this was the first such attack in the area. Shini’s father-in-law Sankaran Nair had stated the motive of the assailant remained unclear. The incident occurred at 8:30 am when the area was quiet. Following the incident, Shini was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital.
Shini's house is situated 200 metres away from the road. The CCTV footage here did not clearly capture the assailant's face.
