
Nileshwar: A police officer and Theyyam performer, Nidhin Panicker, showed incredible bravery during the tragic fire accident at the Veerarkavu temple festival in Nileshwar on Tuesday. As a collection of firecrackers caught fire, chaos erupted, leaving over 150 people injured.
The festival began with a lively atmosphere, with large crowds gathering to watch the Theyyam performances. Suddenly, an explosion disrupted the festivities, sending people into a panic. Many ran in all directions, seeking safety.

Nidin, who was performing as a Theyyam artist, quickly sprang into action. Despite the danger, he rushed toward the scene of the explosion. He jumped through the flames to rescue a child trapped in the fire.
“I heard a loud explosion and did not think of anything else. There was no time to think about my family. I just ran toward the fire. I saw burned children and women in front of me. When I spotted the child lying trapped there, I didn’t hesitate. I didn’t even check if there were more fireworks around,” said Nidhin.
The explosion occurred around 12:15 am, resulting in severe burns for many, including women and children. The injured were rushed to Kasaragod district hospital and various private facilities. Those with critical injuries were transferred to private hospitals in Mangaluru, Kannur, and the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital.
