Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), India’s largest FMCG company, is set to welcome its first woman CEO and Managing Director, Priya Nair, on August 1, 2025. Nair, a Malayali and current President of Unilever’s global Beauty & Wellbeing business, will succeed Rohit Jawa, who steps down after less than two years in the role. With this appointment, she becomes the first Indian woman to lead the company in its nearly 90-year history.

Market reacts with optimism

HUL shares surged 4.6% on Friday, July 11, a day after the company announced Nair’s appointment. Market analysts attributed this jump to growing investor confidence sparked by Nair’s proven leadership record. Citi Research noted that management transitions in India's consumer sector have previously led to improved performance, citing examples like Colgate-Palmolive and Godrej Consumer.

A seasoned leader with global experience

Nair’s association with HUL began in 1995. Over the years, she climbed the ranks, holding key positions across home care, personal care, and beauty divisions. Between 2014 and 2022, she headed HUL’s home care and beauty segments before taking over global marketing roles at Unilever. Her current role, which she assumed in 2023, saw her leading one of Unilever’s fastest-growing verticals.

A company in transition

The leadership change comes at a critical time for HUL. The company has struggled in recent quarters, reporting modest volume growth amidst rising competition from agile, new-age brands. Nair is expected to refresh HUL’s strategy and possibly bring global brands into the Indian market to boost competitiveness in categories like beauty, food, and tea.

More changes on the horizon?

While the spotlight is on Nair, there’s also speculation about other senior leadership changes. Media reports suggest that current CFO Ritesh Tiwari may move to a global role, though the company has denied any immediate changes.
