Thiruvananthapuram: Amid ongoing controversy over his article praising the Kerala government, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has shared a new Facebook post commemorating slain Youth Congress activists Kripesh and Sarath Lal.

Tharoor initially shared an image from the official Facebook page of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which labelled the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] as "cannibals" responsible for the killings. However, he later deleted this post and replaced it with a more neutral message that omitted any reference to the CPM.

In his revised post, Tharoor wrote: "I pay my respects to the memories of Sarath Lal and Kripesh. At this moment, we must remember that violence can never be a solution to political differences in a democratic system."

The tribute came on the fifth anniversary of the murders of Sarath Lal and Kripesh, who were killed on 17 February 2019 in Periya, Kasaragod. Last month, a court sentenced ten accused individuals to double life imprisonment in connection with the case.

Tharoor’s latest social media post follows the backlash he faced within the Congress party for an article he had written in an English-language newspaper, where he acknowledged the achievements of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government in the industrial sector. His article sparked criticism from within his party, with several leaders openly questioning his stance.

While Tharoor has since attempted to distance himself from the controversy, his actions continue to draw attention within Kerala’s political landscape.
