New Delhi: The Supreme Court will consider the SNC-Lavalin case on Tuesday. The bench headed by Justice Surya Kant will consider the case involving Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The decade-old case, which placed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in a tough spot in the past, has been listed more than 31 times in four benches of the apex court in six years so far.

The apex court is considering a plea filed by CBI against the 2017 High Court verdict that acquitted Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Energy Department Secretary K.A Francis.

In addition, the apex court is also considering a plea moved by former electrical board financial advisor K.G. Rajasekharan Nair, former chairman of the board R Sivadasan, and former Chief Engineer Kasturi Ranga Iyer, all of whom are awaiting trial proceedings in the case.

The case pertains to awarding a contract to a Canadian company, SNC Lavalin, for the renovation of three hydel projects - Chengulam, Pallivasal and Panniyar - when Pinarayi Vijayan was the power minister in then EK Nayanar cabinet between 1996 and 1998. The contract had allegedly led to a loss of Rs 86.25 crore.
